Universal Knocks Out Summer Season With Killer B.O.
The studio set a record for domestic summer box office with a
successful collection of high-profile projects.
By Lisa Johnson
UNIVERSAL CITY
Universal Pictures is having one amazing summer. After Wednesday
night’s business, the studio set a new studio record for domestic summer box
office, passing its previous summer record of $665.9 million from 2001.
With three summer box office weekends still to come, Universal has
already earned a total of $667.8 million this summer and $693.1 million
this year.
Universal already made box-office history this summer with three
consecutive openings of more than $50 million: Bruce Almighty, which set a
new record for a nonsequel comedy with $85.7 million over Memorial Day
weekend and has taken in $239.5 million to date at the domestic box
office; 2 Fast 2 Furious, which opened to $50.5 million and has grossed
$126.0 million to date; and The Hulk, which set a new June record with its
opening weekend of $62.0 million, and has taken in $130.9 at the
domestic box office. Prior to this, no studio had ever had even two $50
million openings in a row.
In addition to these three number one openings, Universal had its
fourth summer release to open to number one at the domestic box office with
American Wedding, which took in $33.4 million in its first three days
and has grossed $71.1 million to date. Seabiscuit, which opened July
25th in a smaller number of theaters nationwide and is running well,
buoyed by excellent reviews and enthusiastic word-of-mouth, and has taken in
$73.8 million date. Johnny English, which had already grossed more than
$116 million overseas prior to its domestic release, has amassed $26.5
million in the U.S. and Canada.
Universal Pictures Distribution President Nikki Rocco said, “Our summer
slate was comprised of films with a great amount of diversity, and we
adapted ourselves to every challenge. But since this is a 52-week
business for us, the really good news is that we have an equally strong
lineup for the fall and holiday season.”
Universal Pictures’ early fall schedule kicks off on September 26 with
The Rundown, an action-adventure starring The Rock, Seann William
Scott, Rosario Dawson and Christopher Walken, directed by Peter Berg. On
October 10, George Clooney and Catherine Zeta-Jones square off in a
romantic battle of the sexes comedy, Intolerable Cruelty, from Brian Grazer
and Joel Coen & Ethan Coen. On November 14, Jessica Alba stars as Honey,
a talented young dancer-choreographer who finds real meaning in her
life when she befriends a group of street-dancing neighborhood kids.

Rock backstage at Raw last night!
While he wasn’t on the show, The Rock was indeed backstage at RAW last night. WWE chose not to use him on the show due to the fact that they thought there was no sense putting him on WWE television for one week and then having him disappear for months. They also wanted to build SummerSlam matches last night and by putting The Rock on the show, it would have limited the amount of time to do that.

Big IF for Rock tonight on Raw??!
As of writing this, The Rock is not expected to make an appearance on RAW tonight, as was previously rumored. According to several sources within the WWE locker room, the superstar has not been written into tonight?s show as of yesterday. As you all know, The Rock had said in a radio interview that he would be appearing on the July 21st edition of RAW, which did not happen. So at this point, I look for the same thing to occur tonight.

Talk about Rock/Britney Spears Connection, More On Rock/RAW on Impact Fan Forum

- The offer is still open for The Rock to appear on tomorrows RAW, since it emanates from Vancouver, the site of filming for his upcoming Walking Tall. Of course, Rock was also scheduled for RAW two weeks ago, and declined due to filming schedule, so this really is just a wait and see type of deal.
- A source from the taping last night in California informed me that The Rock and Britney Spears co-presented an award at the Teen Choice Awards. They presented Queen Latifah with the award for Choice Movie Actress. If youre interested in checking out the awards show, it airs on FOX this Wednesday at 8PM EST.
Congratulations Sabrina you are our February 2012 DJ fan of the month!
This is why she is Dwayne Fan of The Month:
‘I have been a fan of The Rock, Dwayne Johnson, since i have been 9 years old. Now being 24, i have grown to appreciate and look up to him not only as a role model , but as someone that i consider a HUGE influence of who i am today. I used to go to RAW and Smackdown as a young girl, crying over just being in the same room as him. My family would know to buy my only his merchandise for holidays and special events. To this day, people still admire me for my dedication as a fan, and my willingness to one day meet him in person. I dont even know what i would do if i did, i know someone would have to catch me when i fall, becuase i know i would be hitting the floor!”
