Here’s an article the gives critcism to Rock’s film career it talks about some of his other films as well..not that I agree but it’s a read…
Perhaps The Rock needs to return to the ring. His latest film, Doom, just hit theaters and while it was #1 at the box office, it grossed a paltry $15 million. That?s about what 2004?s Walking Tall grossed its opening weekend and it went on to make only about $46 million ($10 million less than its budget). The Rock was a huge wrestling star. With the possible exceptions of Hulk Hogan and Stone Cold Steve Austin, he was perhaps the most popular wrestler of the last fifteen years. Ask any wrestling fan, and he will fondly remember some of his great matches. But, ask any film fan, and I highly doubt he fondly remember any of his films. The Rock should really consider returning to what he does best and leave the acting to others.
To continue to look at the numbers, The Rock?s first high-profile film was 2001?s The Mummy Returns which grossed over $200! Of course, it was a sequel to a popular film, and The Rock only had a small part. The following year, his first staring role came in The Scorpion King, the last of the Mummy trilogy. The reviews were somewhat mixed, but a $90 million box office says that it was a hit. At the very least, it appeared that The Rock had the ability and screen presence to carry a movie. However, The Scorpion King still had the strength of the previous two films to help get an audience and it still grossed less than half of its predecessor.
Next for The Rock came The Rundown in 2003, co-starring Christopher Walken, Rosario Dawson, and Seann William Scott. In my opinion, it’s the best of The Rock?s films. I really enjoyed it. But, it only made $47 million. I thought for sure it would at least tie The Scorpion King, but once again it made only a little more than half of his previous film. From $200 million, to $90 million, to $47 million is not a good pattern. As mentioned above, his next film, Walking Tall, made $46 million, which held steady from The Rundown, but holding a disappointing total steady is not exactly something to brag about. He did have a bit of a come back with Be Cool which earned $55 million. But, if you think about it, it was once again a supporting role, and it was a sequel, and it stared John Travolta. And, it still didn?t do that well at the box office, especially considering its $75 million budget. The supposed heir to the action movie star throne held by the likes of Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger hasn?t exactly put a lot of butts in movie theater seats.
The Rock?s films have gotten decent reviews. I?ve heard several film critics who like him as an actor and think he could be a big star some day. But, it hasn?t happened yet. Maybe he needs a better manager and agent to pick better films for him. I personally didn?t see Walking Tall because it just didn?t look that good. And I like The Rock. I was a huge fan of his as a wrestler. I thought he was hilarious when
he hosted Saturday Night Live. I enjoy seeing him interviewed when he does the late night talk show circuit. He has the potential to be a good action star. I just honestly don?t see it ever happening, so I really hope he makes a return to the WWE where he can go back to, to quote The Rock himself, ?entertaining the millions and millions of The Rock?s fans.? Unfortunately, with two movies in post-production set to come out next year, one being filmed now, two more in pre-production, and another just announced, it doesn?t look like The Rock?s acting career is close to being over. Obviously there are plenty of producers out there who are willing to pay him big bucks to make movies. I guess if I was able to make that kind of money without taking the physical punishment of the wrestling ring, I would do that too. So, here?s to hoping that one of his several upcoming movies lives up to his potential.
