He was The Rock. Now he’s a solid Dwayne Johnson.
Sure, there was the transitional Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, but he doesn’t call himself by his wrestling moniker anymore.
Confidence is like that in the movie industry. Success breeds it, and the 38-year-old has enjoyed his fair share since the transition.
His latest Rock-less vehicle is a serious sort of revenge thriller called Faster, which opened on Wednesday.
In the shoot ’em up, directed by George Tillman Jr., Johnson plays Driver, an ex-con who sets out to avenge the murder of his brother after a screwed-up bank job. The trouble is that Driver hits some obstacles on his mission to pay back those who betrayed him.
A seasoned cop (Billy Bob Thornton), just days from retiring, is on his trail. And so is an oddball hitman (Oliver Jackson-Cohen), who kills more for kicks than bucks. Carla Gugino plays another cop trying to sort out the mess, while Tom Berenger shows up briefly as the warden offering advice that doesn’t get heeded.
As Driver gets deeper into the trackdown, he starts realizing he may have more enemies, and targets, than he had bargained for.
Dark and disturbing, Faster is a definite departure from Johnson’s previous string of comedies but, according to the actor, that’s a coincidence. Continue reading »
Dwayne Johnson on his return to his action roots. by Fred Topel

Dwayne Johnson is back in action with Faster, a revenge thriller about a Driver (Johnson) going after the gang that betrayed him and killed his brother. He gave a press conference about the film over the weekend. Here’s what I got to ask him and what I got from the other questions he answered.
First, the Fred questions:
Crave Online: How do you perfect the perfect stare and how do you decide which stare to use on which bad guy?
Dwayne Johnson: Watching a lot of Clint Eastwood. That was one of the great welcome challenges of the movie and the script that these guys wrote was the challenge of trying to hold an audience without saying many words, if any at all.
Crave Online: Do you practice in front of a mirror?
Dwayne Johnson: Depending on the bad guy, yeah. No, no. It just comes with prep. Again I give a lot of credit to George [Tillman Jr.] who’s one of the most prepared directors I’ve ever been around, doing his diligence and talking about the scene every day and just doing a lot of talking and communicating about it. So by the time you’re ready to shoot, regardless of who the bad guy is, whether it’s Billy, whether it’s Adewale, whoever it is, you’re ready. Continue reading »
Though “Faster” did enough business Friday to move its five-day weekend forecast above the $10 million mark, it is still a massive disappointment considering its positioning as the only legitimately-male-skewing film made available over Thanksgiving.
Insiders are at least partially blaming the disappointing box office on star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s loss of credibility as an action superstar.
With $3.2 million in receipts Friday, “Faster” landed in seventh place. Its total is now around $6.5 million, and while estimates have the film adding another $5 million by the end of Sunday, it will easily fall short of estimates, the most conservative of which had the film looking at $14-16 million for its debut Continue reading »
There is an article in UK Total Film Magazine - Issue 175 featuring “Faster.” I was not able to find the magazine in my area but I did post the cover and a picture of the article. If anyone has the magazine or scans of it please donate it to us we will give credit and it’s much appreciated.
Coming Soon: Faster
Cars, guns, muscles, action. The Rock goes back to basics. We go grab an exclusive. Plus cinema’s greatest eyebrow-raisers.
It’s been ten years since Dwayne Johnson began his acting career segueing from WWF star to master of the action genre. And after taking some career diversifying movie roles in comedies like Get Smart and children’s fare like The Tooth Fairy, he’s returned to the action game again in the revenge film Faster, a rollicking ride of a good time with plenty of big guns, fast cars and even faster 70s style action. So VIBE.com now presents, ’5 Reasons To See The Movie Faster With Quotes by Dwayne Johnson.’
Reason 5: Now that Sly and Arnold are over the hill and Vin Diesel doesn’t seem to have game, Dwayne Johnson is ready to take over the whole damn action film genre.
Johnson: “Absolutely, sure. The action genre is my home I’m a physical guy and I love that and enjoy it. But it was important for me to have diverse career. Ten years ago I didn’t want to be defined or pigeonholed as the action guy, or the comedy guy or the family guy— I really wanted to do everything.” Continue reading »

Dwayne talks about his crazy grandfather and the long line of huge, muscular men in his family. Plus, Dwayne tells the story of his very first car, complete with sleeping crackhead in the back seat.

OUR GRADE: B-
Review in a Hurry:Dwayne Johnson is back in action! But so are a lot of dated story tropes—and that’s OK! Until it isn’t. We’re pleased as punch to see The Rock in kick-butt mode in this revenge flick, too bad an unnecessary major character and some silly last-act twists and turns almost ruin the fun.
The Bigger Picture: After a decade in the clink, the man known only as Driver (Johnson) quickly acquires a classic black Chevelle, a hit list and a very big gun. Driven by revenge at the loss of his brother from a bank heist gone wrong, Driver aims to take out everyone involved. This gets the attention of Cop (Billy Bob Thornton), and the race is on!
Director George Tillman, Jr. (Notorious) keeps things moving at a quick pace. Everything in this picture is toned and muscular: the actors, the cars, those big guns. For half of the film’s 90 minutes this refreshingly simple approach is as effective as a movie with characters named Driver and Cop should be. Continue reading »
Congratulations Sabrina you are our February 2012 DJ fan of the month!
This is why she is Dwayne Fan of The Month:
‘I have been a fan of The Rock, Dwayne Johnson, since i have been 9 years old. Now being 24, i have grown to appreciate and look up to him not only as a role model , but as someone that i consider a HUGE influence of who i am today. I used to go to RAW and Smackdown as a young girl, crying over just being in the same room as him. My family would know to buy my only his merchandise for holidays and special events. To this day, people still admire me for my dedication as a fan, and my willingness to one day meet him in person. I dont even know what i would do if i did, i know someone would have to catch me when i fall, becuase i know i would be hitting the floor!”
