Kenneth Branagh-Chris Hemsworth’s THOR Down, Kristen Wiig’s BRIDESMAIDS Surprises, Women Rule: Box Office
Following Thor and Bridesmaids at the North American box office on Friday, May 13, Fast Five, starring Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, and Jordana Brewster, drew $5.87m at no. 3 according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo.. The Justin Lin-directed actioner has thus passed the $150m milestone at the domestic box office on Day 15. Total to date: $155.12m.
At no. 4, newcomer Priest, directed by Scott Charles Stewart, and starring Paul Bettany, Cam Gigandet, Maggie Q, Karl Urban, and Lily Collins, scored $5.6m. Partly thanks to 3D surcharges, Priest, based on Hyung Min-Woo’s graphic novels, had a decent $1,955 per-theater average.
At no. 5, Ginnifer Goodwin and Kate Hudson’s Something Borrowed earned $2.3m. It was followed by Paula Patton and Angela Bassett’s Jumping the Broom with $2m at no. 6.
Next in line were Carlos Saldanha’s Rio, featuring the voices of Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway, with $1.6m at no. 7 and the Reese Witherspoon-Robert Pattinson-Christoph Waltz circus drama Water for Elephants with $1.16m at no. 8.
Rounding out the top twelve were Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family with $600k, AnnaSophia Robb’s Soul Surfer with $475k, Patrick Wilson-Rose Byrne’s Insidious with $330k, and Aimee Teegarden-Thomas McDonell’s Prom with $260k — which has been performing better than expected on weekends.
Gone from the top twelve on Friday were the Disney documentary African Cats, Glenn Close-Hayden Panettiere’s Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil, Jake Gyllenhaal-Michelle Monaghan’s Source Code.
Among the top-twelve movies Bridesmaids had the highest per-theater average, $2,685. Soul Surfer had the lowest, $267.
Also among the top twelve (barring newcomers Bridesmaids and Priest), Rio posted the highest Thursday-to-Friday attendance increase rate, +267%. Water for Elephants posted the lowest, +107%.
