Top 10 Best Movies – TIME
10. Fast Five
This list is short on sensitive indie dramas, heavy on mainstream mayhem, but it was that kind of year. The big boys — Hollywood technicians, from FX gurus to stunt choreographers — used their tools with more craft and cojones than the Sundance auteurs. Fast Five, fifth in the Fast & Furious series, is a live-action movie with so much whirling tumult, so many moments of low genius, that it plays like an animated car-toon. The dialogue, characterizations and acting are irrelevant to the success of this first great film of the post-human era. As if recalling the epochal heist in 1903′s The Great Train Robbery and, a decade later, the auto carnage of Mack Sennett’s Keystone Kops, director Justin Lin goes back to basics with another train robbery and vehicular violence in police rides — souped up and stripped down like stock cars in a death race — on the streets of Rio. A carnival of roguish heroes and pretty girls, car chases and cliffhangers, Fast Five is as much a tribute as The Artist or Hugo to the cinema’s primal thrills.
I have added over 1000 screencaps of the Fast Five extended edition DVD to the galleries. It features deleted scenes, gag reel, menu art and a special feature. Sorry for the wait but enjoy.
Paul Walker, left, and Vin Diesel in “Fast Five” (Jaimie Trueblood / Universal Pictures)
“Fast Five,” which hits Blu-ray and DVD this week, pulled in $616 million in worldwide box office and, yes, a sixth (and seventh?) film in the high-velocity franchise is revving up already. Our Geoff Boucher caught up with director Justin Lin on Monday to talk about the home video release and the franchise’s impressive mileage with him at the wheel for three of the movies.
GB: “Fast Five” surprised some Hollywood observers with its impressive showing — it earned more money than “Cars 2,” “Thor” or “Captain America: The First Avenger,” films that were more expensive to make. Did you have a good feeling going into the project or were you also caught off guard a bit by the way everything fell into place for that strong opening weekend?
JL: The whole idea of this being part of the franchise was something that we talked about from Day One. When I talked to the studio back on [the third film in the franchise] ”Tokyo Drift,” it was really about trying to rebuild something and for me it was very important to get the sensibility of it all. It’s funny at that point, that was in 2005, we were talking about how if we had the opportunity — and if the audience embraced it — that we’d have it all evolve to the things you see now. So a lot of this was talked about and the reason we were able to make “Fast Five” is because that was something embraced by the fans and it allowed us to grow. On the creative side that felt good and on the set it felt good. And it was the greatest hope when I signed on to do these movies. Continue reading »
The film, which features an ensemble cast including Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Tyrese Gibson, Jordana Brewster, Ludacris and Sung Kang, will be released in a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack with a digital copy. A DVD packaging combo pack with identical contents will also be made available.
Fast Five kicked off the summer movie season last April and silenced any doubters who predicted that the franchise was running out of gas. The film pulled in an astonishing $86 million in its opening weekend and has currently racked up over $600 million in worldwide box office sales.

Gibson talked about Fast Five and Fast Six, filming Transformers in 3D, if he has the desire to direct, how he ended up writing a bestselling book (How to Get Out of Your Own Way), his new album Open Invitation, Twitter, and a lot more. Hit the jump for the audio and transcript.
Excerpts:
Collider: I definitely want to ask you about Fast Five. Obviously, that movie made a ton of money. When did you find out that they were going to shake up the genre like that and turn it into a heist movie?
Gibson: I was just happy that the fans showed up. I mean, it is over $600 million worldwide right now and it is still performing right now over overseas. It is still opening up in different regions. You know, you just want to work on something that everybody is going to show up and appreciate. As actors, you want to work on a movie that people are going to show up for and enjoy especially when you are putting so much time and effort into something. People walked away from Fast Five and they laughed, they were on the edge of their seat, and there was a lot of action. More than anything, I am just happy with it being multiethnic and it crushed a lot of stereotypes. A lot of these movies are starting to look really black and really white. But it was white, black, Asian, and Israeli. It was every nationality that was possible in one movie, and the movie performed big. I think movies like Fast Five are going to create a new standard in Hollywood. It is stuff like that that really makes me feel good about being a part of it.
I don’t know if you know this but there is something going on right now in Las Vegas called the Licensing Expo. At the Licensing Expo, there is a banner for Fast and Furious 6 and it says 2013 at the bottom. Let’s be honest here, has anyone started talking to you about a 6th movie?
Gibson: There is some buzz and I know that they brought the writer, Chris Morgan, who did a great job on it back on board. To be honest, I’m sure there has to be a Fast Six because the fans showed up and responded so well to it. I just have to figure out which role I’m going to play and if it even makes sense for me to do a six. We just have to cross that bridge when we get there.
Ok I know this is kinda outdated but the cast of Fast Five were featured on Cinemax HD in April and they all gave interviews about the film. It’s really candid and one of the very few ones I have seen where the whole cast was together at the same time. There are 2 videos which will play right after each other.
“Fast Five” has already made more than $568 million worldwide and Dwayne Johnson is open to filming yet another sequel, on one condition.
“Well, it all depends… on how much a** I could kick in that movie,” he told Access Hollywood with a smile backstage at Spike TV’s Guy’s Choice Awards on Saturday night.
Dwayne said he expects the team behind the successful film series is probably already at work on the sequel thanks to the major success of the last venture – its fifth, also starring original franchise names Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Jordana Brewster.
“I’m sure they’re getting ready to start writing away,” Dwayne told Access. “The best part about the success of ‘Fast Five’ is the fact of how much the fans love it.” Continue reading »
Fast Five is still speeding w/no finish line in sight! Check out the latest numbers at the box office. I saw it again this past weekend myself:
In a distant second, Fast Five took a 57 percent dive but continued its impressive foreign run with an estimated $25 million. That brought its total to $320 million, passing Rio as 2011′s top movie overseas (a title which should belong to Pirates by Friday or Saturday). Worldwide, it became the year’s first movie to cross the $500 million worldwide mark.
Kenneth Branagh-Chris Hemsworth’s THOR Down, Kristen Wiig’s BRIDESMAIDS Surprises, Women Rule: Box Office
Following Thor and Bridesmaids at the North American box office on Friday, May 13, Fast Five, starring Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, and Jordana Brewster, drew $5.87m at no. 3 according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo.. The Justin Lin-directed actioner has thus passed the $150m milestone at the domestic box office on Day 15. Total to date: $155.12m.
At no. 4, newcomer Priest, directed by Scott Charles Stewart, and starring Paul Bettany, Cam Gigandet, Maggie Q, Karl Urban, and Lily Collins, scored $5.6m. Partly thanks to 3D surcharges, Priest, based on Hyung Min-Woo’s graphic novels, had a decent $1,955 per-theater average. Continue reading »
Congratulations Sabrina you are our February 2012 DJ fan of the month!
This is why she is Dwayne Fan of The Month:
‘I have been a fan of The Rock, Dwayne Johnson, since i have been 9 years old. Now being 24, i have grown to appreciate and look up to him not only as a role model , but as someone that i consider a HUGE influence of who i am today. I used to go to RAW and Smackdown as a young girl, crying over just being in the same room as him. My family would know to buy my only his merchandise for holidays and special events. To this day, people still admire me for my dedication as a fan, and my willingness to one day meet him in person. I dont even know what i would do if i did, i know someone would have to catch me when i fall, becuase i know i would be hitting the floor!”
